BorgWarner Turbo System SEMA 2017 - New Midframe 1,100 Horsepower SX300SX-E

About BorgWarner Turbo Systems

Located in Arden, North Carolina, BorgWarner Turbo Systems is the leading global supplier of turbochargers for diesel- and gasoline-powered passenger cars, light trucks and commercial vehicles. A pioneer in turbocharging technology since 1952, BorgWarner Turbo Systems continues to lead advancements in the industry with innovations designed to improve fuel economy, reduce emissions and optimize vehicle performance.

Engineered For Racing - EFR

The EFR line of turbos was born out of an internal BorgWarner Turbo Systems program labeled Advanced Aftermarket Products. The program was engineered by a cross-functional team that began with the proverbial clean-sheet of paper. No legacy products, no preconceived notions of what a turbo could or could not have; no restrictions. The aerodynamics for the product line were selected using a range of optimized combinations that would give users turbo solutions anywhere between 250 and 1000 horsepower capability per turbo. Next, a list of every notable design characteristic for an engine boosting device was tabled. Specific interest was given to new ideas that had never been formed in metal or had never been combined into an aftermarket turbo.

The result is the new EFR line of turbos from BorgWarner. These turbos contain a bevy of key attributes such as Gamma Ti turbine wheels, dual ceramic ball bearing cartridges and investment cast stainless steel turbine housings. Collectively, those features help give the EFR line its innovative appeal and will provide a breakthrough experience in durability, device responsiveness and installer/user satisfaction.

The AirWerks line of turbochargers draws from years of proven success in the OEM marketplace.  Taking proven technology and adapting it into usable configurations for pro racers and extreme street tuners. The AirWerks line of turbochargers is able to meet a wide range of horsepower requirements, ranging from the S1BG cable of supporting 120 horsepower up to the S510 line supporting up to 1650 horsepower per turbocharger. All of the AirWerks turbochargers are rebuild able, upgradeable, and extremely versatile.

Fredric Aasbo's Toyota Corolla iM Drift Machine

A radically different chassis can take a couple of seasons for even a top team to get competitive. Not so for Papadakis Racing and their Rockstar Toyota Corolla iM that they built for Fredric Aasbo.

Turbo Tech: Internal vs. External Wastegates

Why do internally wastegated turbos give up power to externally wastegated configurations and how much power does it give up? The 'why' is easy to explain, the 'how' is much more complicated. We use math and the BorgWarner MatchBot to explain.

Breaking Records with Solo Motorsports BMW 135i

Solo Motorsports brothers, Harold and Tony Marulanda, have been in the automotive scene in Atlanta since the mid-'90s, and have always been car freaks. Let's take a look at their EFR powered record breaking BMW 135i.

Team R-Colt WTAC Mitsubishi Ralliart Colt

A Mitsubishi Colt might not seem like your first choice for a time attack vehicle, but the existence of a spiced up Ralliart version makes it more mod friendly. The Colt is still not what you would call a popular performance platform to modify, so Team R-Colt had to go about fabricating a lot of their modifications. Built, not bought!

PZ Tuning's 9th Gen EFR Powered Time Attack Civic

There's nothing like seeing a race car in action. Even more, there is nothing like watching a race car move from a bare shell into a Global Time Attack Unlimited Front Wheel Drive class winning race car.

Extreme Engine Tech: The Ultimate K24

We have been working with Motovicity to demonstrate the building of a potent Honda K24Z7 motor, built completely from in stock and off the shelf parts. Our goal is not to build a dyno queen or a drag motor, but to build a strong K motor all from off the shelf parts with the intention of getting the most power possible on pump gas with the widest most useable powerband. We chose a Borg Warner EFR 76/70 Turbo with a divided .94 A/R T4 flange exhaust housing.  The Borg Warner EFR is a highly advanced turbo with a long list of features that a turbo geek will drool over.

BPG's EFR Powered BNR32 Time Attack Special

Some of the cars at the WTAC are so amazing and so exotic that for most of us can just look and drool.  We were looking at cars to feature and we wanted to show what could be done for a moderate amount of cash by regular people. Clean solid work by smart people but nothing that needed open wheel or prototype levels of engineering and fabrication skill.

Record Breaker: PZ Tuning's 531whp EFR Powered RSX

William Au-Yeung burst onto the Global Time Attack stage at Road Atlanta with his turbo Acura RSX.  Not only did he place first, but he broke the track record for Limited Front Wheel Drive in the process. The MotoIQ crew was roaming the IndyCar paddock during the Grand Prix of Long Beach hoping to get our eyes on some high-end race machinery. Getting up close with an IndyCar was more than we could have hoped for as it represents the highest form of open wheel racing for a US based series. Besides, it has turbos!

Project 240SX Land Speed Racer: Better Living Through Volumetric Efficiency

Wi "A big ass turbo with an engine strapped to it."  From under the hood, that's how Project 240SX LSR is best described. With drag increasing exponentially with speed, more power is exactly what we need to go faster.

Project Rotary FD RX-7: BorgWarner AirWerks S300SX

Designing and installing the turbo setup is one of the most enjoyable aspects of any build. It is a balancing act of desired goals and undeniable trade-offs. For this RX-7 we are trying to maximize response around a specific power limit without breaking the bank.

Fredric Aasbo/Papadakis Racing EFR Powered 2AR

Many have declared the turbocharged small displacement 4 cylinder engine is dead in the sport of Pro Drifting. But turbochargers are coming back to the delight of fans and challenging the rule of the V8!  One of the most intriguing and successful applications of new turbo technology is the EFR powered Toyota 2AR engine developed by Papadakis racing and driven by Fredric Aasbo. specific power limit without breaking the bank.

Sierra Sierra EVO Update & BorgWarner EFR Turbos

The last test at Buttonwillow was the straw that broke the camel's back both for the choice of turbocharger and the cylinder head sealing issues. You can see the despair in the picture above, but with any down there's always going to be an up. BorgWarner with their EFR turbo lineup and Cosworth with our turbo race engine experience are coming to the rescue.
